Pioneer Loan & Jewelry is a Pawn Shop with a long Las Vegas History. Pioneer has been in Las Vegas almost as long as there has been a city known as Las Vegas.
Pioneer was established in 1931(as certified by the Las Vegas review Journal)on the corner of Fremont and 1st street near the current Pioneer Casino as a real estate/insurance office with a license to loan. It became a formal pawn shop when the City of Las Vegas enacted a pawn ordinance in 1945. The shop was owned by Mr. I.L. Lawlor and Mr. J.H. Eckerson as of 1950. Pioneer was moved to 15 Fremont st. in 1960 and was owned by Mr. Robert Powell. Pioneer was moved again in 1965 to 20 Fremont st. with Mr. Kronberg as a partner. In 1972 Mr. Kronberg and Mr. Perlmutter became partners and the pawn shop was moved to 113 North 1st st. One block off Fremont st. directly across from the side door of Binion's Horseshoe. In 1989 the current owners Erminia and Bill Drobkin took over. Pioneer Loan and Jewelry remained in that location for 30 years until the building lease expired and the Fremont St. redevelopment project caused the loss of easy access and all parking in front of the pawn shop. So in 2002 they moved one last time, to 520 N. Eastern Ave.
The Grand Opening was officiated by the Mayor of Las Vegas, Oscar Goodman and attended by several city council members as well as over 1000 locals.
The Pawn Shop was voted " the Best of Las Vegas" for 2002, 2003, 2004, the only three years that Pawn Shops were included in "The Best Of Las Vegas" votings.
